OUR JOURNEY
During a community outreach visit in Kebbi State, our founder met Lubba, a fifteen year old girl carrying a child on her back while hawking on the streets. She was already divorced and a mother. At the local school, only five girls were enrolled among hundreds of pupils. The following week, the principal reported that an eleven-year-old girl in JSS1 had been withdrawn from school and married off.
Shortly after, another encounter deepened that understanding. During a visit to a community in Northern Nigeria, our founder met an elderly woman whose family was struggling to survive. After offering her 500 naira as a small gesture of support, she responded by offering two of her granddaughters, aged twelve and thirteen, in marriage.
For her, it was not an extraordinary decision. It was survival
These encounters showed how poverty, limited educational opportunities, restrictive social norms, gender inequality, and weak institutional support can come together to limit the choices available to women and girls. What looked like individual hardship was connected to wider conditions affecting families and communities.
the question became deeper:
How do we change the systems that make this exclusion possible?
In 2017, our founder came together with a small group of colleagues who shared a common belief, that every woman, girl, and young person deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, realize their potential, and shape their own future. What began as a youth led initiative has since evolved into a systems focused development organization working alongside communities, governments, civil society, development partners, and the private sector to strengthen the systems that create opportunity and sustain change.
FROM A QUESTION TO A SYSTEM
Building Over Time
Since 2017, our work has grown from community-based initiatives into programmes and partnerships across different areas of development in Africa. Our next phase builds on this experience, taking us towards a 2030 vision focused on strengthening systems, expanding what works, and reaching more communities across Africa.

A small group begins working directly with communities in Northern Nigeria.
BCAI is formally incorporated.
Early models tested in education and health earn their first institutional partnerships.
Programmes scale across education, gender, youth, health, and environment, reaching over a million people.
A new strategic plan sets the course for the next chapter.
The challenges that shaped Lubba’s story have not disappeared. But our work has grown from responding to individual experiences to working with communities and institutions to address the systems behind them.
